HANDHELD SCREEN TIME LINKED TO SPEECH DELAYS

by Kala May 12, 2017

A research study was presented on May 6th at the Moscone West Convention Center in San Francisco. The study included 894 kids between 6 months-2 years who were part of a practice-based research network in Toronto between 2011 and 2015. The study’s principal investigator was Dr. Catherin Birken (The Hospital for Sick Children). Please see attached abstract for more information.
Highlights from study:
• 20% of children had an average use of 28 minutes on a handheld devise by the time they were 18 months old
• for every 30 minute increase in handheld screen time, there was a 49% increased risk of expressive speech delays
• the American Academy of Pediatrics discourages any screen time for children 18 months and younger
