Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect in the first visit?

The initial visit is an one hour long assessment. The purpose of the assessment is to determine your child’s developmental abilities and set goals.  Assessments are typically carried out in 1 or 2 one-hour sessions.  If your child has had a full assessment completed elsewhere recently,  the assessment session may be shortened.  Some of the assessment findings will be shared right away if possible.  Other tests need to be scored and will be shared on a follow-up visit when goals and the next steps are discussed.

Will I get a report?

An assessment report will be provided and reviewed with you on the second visit.

Do I stay with my child during the visits?

It is recommended that you stay for the visits so you are able to follow through with recommendations at home.  Every child is different,  but most prefer to have a parent present.  Every effort is made to ensure your child is comfortable and has a good experience.  For example,  fun activities will be combined with non-preferred activities such as printing.  Positive reinforcement such as stickers or verbal praise will also be used.

What happens after the assessment is completed?

A follow-up visit will be booked.  Typically during the second visit, the report and recommendations will be reviewed.  If therapy is indicated, you will be informed of the recommended frequency and duration of visits.  The number of visits suggested will be based on the needs of your child.  You will be given homework to complete between sessions. Follow through at home is essential for your child to make gains quickly. Subsequent treatment sessions are typically one hour in length.

Are occupational therapy services covered by insurance?

Many extended health care benefit plans cover Occupational Therapy.  It is recommended you check your individual plan for details regarding coverage.  A receipt will be provided for you to submit to your insurance plan in order to be reimbursed for your visits.
