Technology is here to stay so we may as well embrace it. Kids love playing on your phones or tablets. Make those teachable moments by using apps that have a purpose. Below are a few free apps that may be appropriate for your  child.

1. Fruit Ninja (free, Droid, iPhone, iPod, Touch, iPad) With the swipe of the screen, the child must chop up fruit as it flies across the screen. Works on eye-hand coordination and tracking skills.

2. Sam Phibian (free, iPhone and iPad) Children work on visual tracking/scanning, attention, matching and eye hand coordination by making the frog eat the correct colour, amount and type of insects flying through the air.

3. 123s ABCs Cursive Letters (free, Droid) Based on Zaner-Bloser Cursive Style, the student can practice forming cursive lowercase letter, cursive uppercase letters, numbers or shapes.

4. 123s &ABCs Print Letters (free, Droid) Based on the Handwriting Without Tears Print Style, students practice tracing lowercase and uppercase letters. Students can also practice numbers and shapes. The width of the pen tracing can be changed to suit a  younger age group as well.

5. Letris 2(free, Droid) This game is a fun way for kids to work on spelling short sight words and larger vocabulary words they are learning. They have to tap the letters with their finger and spell a word. The letters keep falling, so there is a time limit. This game can also be played against another player which makes it more  fun.

Other Apps

My Underwear (0.99, iPad, iPhone, iPod) Child catches underwear, matches coloured underwear or patterns of underwear to coloured or patterned animals. It can also be used to work on visual memory matching.
